Hacienda Isabella

Hacienda Isabella is owned by Kuh Ledesma who has wowed audiences onstage with her beautiful voice and arresting presence. Kuh named it after her beautiful and equally talented daughter. Kuh has owned a farm in the area for the last six years, a property that she was contemplating selling since hardly anyone went there anymore. But she decided otherwise. She saw the potential of her property and soon transformed it into a picturesque bed & breakfast. Hacienda Isabella is a sprawling 4-hectare property with an airy, elegant white house, an expansive garden and lawn, and adjacent verandahs. The restaurant, open on weekends, serves a set menu consisting mainly of salads and pastas. Using many of Kuh’s very own recipes, the menu reflects the relaxed, no-frills ambience of the place.

Kuh has big plans for Hacienda Isabella. Affordable enough to attract the ABC crowd, Kuh envisions the hacienda for the young, the old, couples and families. already abuzz with construction, the place will soon boast several farmhouses, complete with fireplaces, to serve as cozy overnight retreats for couples or families who want to escape the city. Hacienda Isabella also has a huge garden for children to frolic in.

Dragon Fruit from Tambong Balagbag

Edilberto Rodil Silan started the Dragon Fruit business six years ago, he started by trying out the trimmings of the plant from the 5 hectare farm in Tambo Balagbag of a Chinese Businessman, Mr. Alex Liton who first brought Dragon Fruit with imported planting materials from Taiwan.

Mr. Silan together with former Governor Juanito Remulla, experimented on how to grow the Dragon Fruit themselves since they have no idea yet if the exotic fruit can manage their local planting resources. The two must have green thumbs as they have grown the fruits successfully in the Cavite Uplands.

People’s familiarity with the Dragon Fruit.

Since the fruit is not common in the Philippines, locals were not patronizing it. Many years ago, farmers tried introducing Dragon Fruit in wet markets selling it for a humble price of almost as low as P20 per kilo on visually morphed or slightly damaged ones. It was only the foreigners especially the Chinese, Taiwanese and Vietnamese who avidly bought the produce. Mr. Silan added that the first Cavite city/town that accepted the Dragon Fruit in the market was Tagaytay City probably because its growing 1st class population, including tourists.

Women farm in Mendez

Situated in Mendez Cavite is a 1.2 hectare coffee orchard owned by St. Scholastica’s College which they rehabilated in 1997 after twenty years being idle. It has been transformed into what is now famously known as Women and Ecology Wholeness Farm which started its operations in 1998.

St. Scholastica’s Institute of Women’s study saw the basic similarity between women and the environment. Both have been reduced to mere resources or objects and between the struggle for gender equity and the search for environmental integrity.

In our country most women especially in the marginalized areas have experienced abuse. Nature on the other hand can be compared to mothers who unconditionally and tirelessly give in to their husbands’ and children’s needs. Both women and nature are being exhausted by today’s society.

The Women and Ecology Wholeness Farm or Ecofarm demonstrates an alternative lifestyle that is environmental-friendly, junk-free and sustainable, the institute practices organic, bio-diverse farming and ecological, biogas waste management. They also practice the use of solar panel heater.
